Hohmann, Judit, DSc

of Chemical Science, habilitated in Pharmaceutical Science, specializes in pharmacognosy, especially in phytochemistry of secondary plant metabolites. Her research activities focused on new candidates from natural source for the discovery of pharmaceutical leads that may serve templates for design and synthesis of new drugs and may the subject of drug optimization. Her research group is engaged mainly in the isolation, structure determination of biologically active sesquiterpenoids, diterpenoids, alkaloids and phenolic compounds from the species of different plant families, including Amaryllidaceae, Asteraceae, Celastraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lamiaceae, Leguminosae and Ranunculaceae. The isolation and identification of plant constituents is carried out by using modern chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, in many cases by guidance of pharmacological screenings. She participates in number of cooperation with pharmaceutical industry aiming development of herbal medicinal products. In this frame new phytoanalytical methods are elaborated for standardization of specific natural products, which guarantee the safety and efficacy of herbal medicines. She is the head of the Department of Pharmacognosy at University of Szeged and the president of the Medicinal Plant Section of Hungarian Society of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
